One year after the Supreme Court judgment that granted financial autonomy to Nigeria’s 774 local government areas, Agora Policy and its partners are convening a high-level policy conversation to assess the impact of the landmark ruling and to identify the reforms needed to improve governance, service delivery and human development at the local level across the country.
Supported by the MacArthur Foundation, this conversation will bring together policymakers, civil society actors, researchers, and development partners to deliberate on the progress and gaps in implementation of the ruling and how to make to make Nigeria’s local councils more accountable, efficient, and responsive.
The event is convened in partnership with the Centre for Fiscal Transparency and Public Integrity and The Cable. The policy conversation is scheduled to hold as follows:

Supported by the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation and planned as one of the activities marking the 2024 International Anti-Corruption Day, this policy conversation will put a spotlight on the state of the anti-corruption campaign in Nigeria, with the overall aim of ensuring that the fight against corruption remains high on Nigeria's political and policy agenda.
The event will bring together heads of anti-corruption agencies and senior members of civil society organisations, legislature, research institutions, donors and development partners who will undertake a stocktake of Nigeria’s current anti-corruption landscape and proffer practical ways to sustain and strengthen existing and evolving transparency and accountability measures in the country.
Organised by Agora Policy in partnership with the Centre for Democracy and Development (CDD) and the Centre for Fiscal Transparency and Public Integrity (CFTPI), the policy conversation is scheduled to hold as follows:
